Nineteen Enfield venues took the top five-star hygiene rating in August, from Prezzo in the Town to a Trent Park cafe. One Southgate grill house scored a 4.
Twenty food businesses across Enfield borough have new hygiene ratings dated August on the Food Standards Agency register, and 19 of them took the top score of 5.
The month’s inspections ranged from Prezzo in Enfield Town to a church community cafe in Oakwood, a home nursery in Enfield Highway and the patient meal unit at North Middlesex Hospital. The one exception was EMBER Grill House on The Broadway in Southgate, rated 4, which the FSA describes as good.

Three of the businesses show only a postcode district. The FSA withholds the address where a business operates from a private home, so home bakers and caterers appear with an outcode only.
Two venues did better than a plain 5. St Thomas Oakwood Community Cafe and Early Birds Tiney Home Nursery took the best possible mark in all three areas the inspector scores: food handling, the condition of the premises, and management of food safety. On those component scores, zero is the top mark.
The wider picture
The register held 2,408 Enfield food businesses when it was read on 4 September. Of those, 2,133 carry a numbered rating, 259 are awaiting a first inspection and 16 are exempt.
1,260 of the 2,133 rated businesses hold a 5, or 59%. Another 435 hold a 4. That leaves 438 businesses, one in five, at 3 or below, including 95 rated 1 and nine rated 0, the mark that means urgent improvement is necessary.
One thing to keep in mind: the register runs behind the inspectors. The newest Enfield rating on the register when we read it was dated 26 August, so late-August visits will surface in next month’s list.
What it means for you
A rating reflects what an inspector found on one day. It is not a verdict on the food.
- Every rated business can be looked up free on the FSA register, the only official source. Third-party listings copy it and go stale.
- A business that thinks its rating is wrong can appeal in writing to the council. It can also request a re-visit once improvements are made, and can publish a right to reply that appears on the register beside the rating.
- Inspections in the borough are carried out by Enfield Council’s food safety team. Concerns about a food business can be reported through the FSA.
Several of this month’s rated venues, including Guangzhou and Just Meat Smoke and BBQ, are in our Enfield business directory, where ratings come from the same register.
