No trains from any Enfield station on Christmas Day 2026. What is fixed for 24 December to 4 January on all four lines, and what is still to come.

There will be no trains from any of Enfield’s twenty stations on Christmas Day, and services on Christmas Eve will stop early on every line. Those two points are already fixed for 2026. Almost everything else is still to be confirmed: National Rail’s festive summary covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 and says operator detail starts appearing “from the beginning of October onwards” (National Rail).

This page sets out what is confirmed, what happened last Christmas on each of Enfield’s four lines, and the dates when the rest should land. It will be updated as each operator publishes.

The quick answer

No National Rail trains on Friday 25 December 2026, and “most train operators will have no service” on Saturday 26 December (National Rail). The Boxing Day bank holiday falls on Monday 28 December, and the operators’ pages for that day, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day all read “information will be published when available” as of 25 September. Last Christmas Liverpool Street was shut for eight days, which cut the Weaver line back to London Fields and turned Greater Anglia’s Lea Valley trains at Stratford; Network Rail has not yet said whether the roof works return this year.

What runs on which day

Date What is confirmed for 2026/27
Thursday 24 December Trains run but finish early. Times not yet published
Friday 25 December No National Rail trains. No TfL Tube, bus or rail either, on last year’s pattern
Saturday 26 December Most operators run nothing. Great Northern and Greater Anglia detail to follow
Monday 28 December (bank holiday) To be confirmed by each operator
29 to 31 December Normally a reduced timetable, subject to engineering work
Friday 1 January 2027 Bank holiday timetable, to be confirmed
Monday 4 January End of the festive period on National Rail’s summary

The Great Northern and Greater Anglia bank holiday pages on National Rail both say “no trains will operate on Christmas Day” and give “information will be published when available” for every other date in the period (Great Northern, Greater Anglia). Great Northern’s own engineering calendar shows nothing yet for 24 December 2026 (Great Northern), which means the entry has not been loaded rather than that the day is clear.

The only major work National Rail has named so far is at Birmingham New Street, from 24 to 28 December, which does not touch Enfield.

Line by line: what happened last Christmas

Enfield is served by four routes, and they were affected differently in 2025/26. Our Enfield train times to London page has the stations on each.

Weaver line (London Overground), Enfield Town, Bush Hill Park, Edmonton Green, Silver Street, Southbury and Turkey Street. Liverpool Street station was closed for eight days, from Thursday 25 December 2025 to Thursday 1 January 2026, for roof renewal and strengthening work in Bishopsgate tunnel. Weaver line trains ran “between Chingford / Enfield Town / Cheshunt and London Fields on these dates”, and there were no trains between Liverpool Street and London Fields “from Christmas Eve shutdown until start of service on Friday 2 January 2026” (Network Rail, 20 October 2025). The same closure happened the Christmas before: in 2024/25 Liverpool Street shut from 25 December to 1 January inclusive (Greater Anglia, 10 October 2024). Two years running is a pattern, not a promise. Network Rail’s roof programme at Liverpool Street is multi-year, so a third closure is possible and would be announced in October.

Lea Valley line (Greater Anglia), Enfield Lock, Brimsdown, Ponders End and Meridian Water. Last year, from Saturday 27 December, Greater Anglia’s West Anglia services ran to and from Stratford instead of Liverpool Street, with Stansted Express turning at Tottenham Hale (Network Rail). Greater Anglia ran nothing on Christmas Day and only a revised Stansted Express on Boxing Day. On Christmas Eve 2024 it said most services finished by 22.15 (Greater Anglia).

Hertford loop (Great Northern), Crews Hill, Gordon Hill, Enfield Chase, Grange Park, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green. Great Northern’s Christmas Eve pattern in recent years has been shuttles between Moorgate and Hertford North with an early finish. In December 2023 it said all services would finish by 21.00 “but on some routes it may be considerably earlier”, with no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day (Network Rail, 14 December 2023). Whether the East Coast digital signalling work returns to Christmas Eve 2026 is the thing to watch on this line.

Piccadilly line, Cockfosters, Oakwood, Southgate and Arnos Grove. Transport for London runs nothing on the majority of its network on Christmas Day. On Boxing Day 2025 the Underground ran a Sunday service, as did buses and trams, with no service on some parts of the network including the Elizabeth line (TfL, 2 December 2025). TfL’s major works calendar currently lists a Piccadilly line upgrade through the autumn but no festive entry (TfL). Its Christmas page was published on 2 December last year.

Christmas Eve last trains

No operator has published Christmas Eve 2026 times. The pattern is consistent: Greater Anglia most services finished by 22.15 in 2024, Great Northern by 21.00 in 2023 and earlier on some routes, and TfL services “finish early” (TfL). If you are coming back into Enfield on the evening of 24 December, plan to be on a train before 9pm and check the exact time in December. This section will carry the published last departures once they exist.

New Year’s Eve

TfL ran all night on New Year’s Eve 2025, with some central London stations closed at busy times and buses on diversion from around midday because of road closures for the Mayor’s fireworks (TfL). National Rail says a number of London routes will have “special train services into the early hours” of New Year’s Day 2027, with detail to follow (National Rail). Which of Enfield’s lines are included is not yet published.

Buses and parking

TfL buses run nothing on Christmas Day and a Sunday service on Boxing Day, on last year’s pattern. There is no first-party word yet on the 2026 festive bus timetable, and Enfield’s own bus changes usually appear on TfL’s page in early December.

Council car parks are free on bank holidays, so on 25 and 28 December and 1 January (parking in Enfield). Separately, the council’s Cabinet approved a proposal for 30 minutes of free parking a day in council car parks and eligible on-street bays on 9 September 2026, subject to consultation and call-in; the existing three-hour free Sunday parking in Enfield Town car parks stays (Enfield Council). Our page on the free 30-minute parking proposal follows whether it lands before Christmas. Road closures and roadworks over the period are on Enfield roadworks and travel.

What is still to be confirmed, and when

  • Whether Liverpool Street closes again, and for which dates. Network Rail’s Anglia announcement came on 20 October last year.
  • Great Northern’s Christmas Eve timetable and any East Coast engineering work. Announced 14 December in 2023.
  • Greater Anglia’s Christmas Eve last trains and Boxing Day service. Announced 10 October in 2024.
  • TfL’s full festive list, including the Piccadilly line and Weaver line on Boxing Day. Published 2 December in 2025.
  • New Year’s Eve late services on the Enfield lines.

Bin days also move over the holiday: see Enfield Christmas bin collections.

Frequently asked questions

Are there trains on Boxing Day 2026? Most operators run nothing on Saturday 26 December. On last year’s pattern the Underground ran a Sunday service, Greater Anglia ran only a revised Stansted Express and the Weaver line did not run. Monday 28 December is the bank holiday, and operators have not yet said what runs.

Will Liverpool Street be closed this Christmas? Not announced. It was closed from 25 December to 1 January in both 2024/25 and 2025/26 for roof and tunnel work, which pushed Weaver line trains back to London Fields and Greater Anglia trains to Stratford.

When do Christmas Eve trains stop? Early, on every line. Exact times are published in December; in recent years Greater Anglia’s last trains ran by about 22.15 and Great Northern’s by 21.00.
